Many factors possessed the continual potential to be decisive
in resolving the North African conflict in the Second World War;
and some did determine the outcome of certain operations, but the
Allied triumph in the Mediterranean, where Malta
and North Africa were successfully supplied, in contrast to the Axis
forces who were starved of essential supplies
such as fuel, ammunition and armour, was decisive in bringing
about the Allied victory in 1943. The struggle for supplies was
as much a part of warfare in the Second World War as those
factors given a higher status in history such as heroic people
and momentous battles, indeed it was in this arena that the campaign was won or lost.
